I attended a talk by award-winning author Irenosen Okojie. She talked about how she approached her first novel, Butterfly Fish.
I remember two distinct pieces of advice that can be applied to achieving any goal in life.
Firstly, most big goals can be pretty overwhelming - whether that be to write a novel or run a marathon. Irenosen’s advice was to treat each chapter as if it were a short story. Does each chapter have a beginning, middle and end? Does it tell its own story?
Of course, it is known commonly that any big goal is more easily achieved by breaking it down into specific, attainable goals.
Secondly, Irenosen explained how her mentor would give her a bit of encouragement each time they connected, but also sent her away with something to work on. Giving her that bit of hope to keep her going until next time.
Even if you don’t have a mentor, life can give you this feedback on your goals, if you listen. I have been close to giving up on my own novel, but just before I do, some small achievement or sign appears to me. Like the recognition I got from Shape Arts.
So set your long term goals and stay aware of the feedback you are getting. Let it spur you on to the next small goal in your trajectory. You will get there, step by step.
Please don't give up on your novel, Karen! You have talent and it's worth pursuing your dream!
